Sen. Menendez and Wife Charged with Obstruction of Justice
Prosecution Alleges Attorneys Lied About Payments
March 5, 2024
WASHINGTON - Senator Bob Menendez of New Jersey and his wife, Nadine Arslanian, were indicted on charges that they took bribes of cash, gold bars, and other luxury items from a wealthy Florida eye doctor. The charges stem from an ongoing investigation into Menendez's relationship with Salomon Melgen, a prominent donor who has been convicted of Medicare fraud.
According to the indictment, Menendez and Arslanian received more than $1 million in bribes from Melgen in exchange for official favors, including pressuring the Obama administration to intervene in a trade dispute involving Melgen's businesses.
The obstruction of justice charges relate to allegations that Menendez's attorneys lied to prosecutors about the payments from Melgen. The trial is scheduled to begin on September 1, 2024.
