John McCain: A Life of Service and Sacrifice
Early Life and Military Career
John Sidney McCain III was born on August 29, 1936, in the Panama Canal Zone. His father and grandfather were both distinguished naval officers, and McCain followed in their footsteps by attending the United States Naval Academy. He graduated in 1958 and went on to serve as a fighter pilot during the Vietnam War.
Prisoner of War
In October 1967, McCain's plane was shot down over North Vietnam. He was captured and held prisoner for five and a half years. During his captivity, McCain was subjected to torture and inhumane treatment. However, he never broke down and refused to cooperate with his captors.
McCain was released in 1973 as part of a prisoner exchange. He returned home a national hero and was awarded the Silver Star, the Bronze Star, and the Purple Heart.
Political Career
After leaving the military, McCain entered politics. He was elected to the House of Representatives in 1982 and to the Senate in 1986. He served in the Senate for over 30 years, becoming a respected leader on both foreign and domestic policy issues.
McCain was known for his independence and his willingness to break with his party when he believed it was necessary. He was a strong voice for human rights and democracy around the world, and he worked tirelessly to promote veterans' causes.
Death and Legacy
McCain died on August 25, 2018, at the age of 81. He was surrounded by his family and friends. His death was a great loss to the nation, and he is remembered as a true American hero.
